Dark horizontal shiplap, a warm wood mantel, and a fireplace create a distinctive focal point in this Napa home. The custom feature wall brings the television, soundbar, and fireplace together in one composition.

For the homeowners, the finished project was a Christmas gift to themselves—a personal update designed around their wishes.

The wall provides a continuous backdrop for the TV and fireplace, with the wood mantel forming a visual break between them. The soundbar sits beneath the mantel, keeping the media components grouped within the same feature.

Horizontal shiplap lines run across the face of the wall, giving the design a consistent rhythm. Trim along the perimeter frames the paneling and defines its edges against the surrounding light walls.

The dark painted shiplap gives this project its character. Its deep gray tone contrasts with the room’s lighter walls and white window trim, while complementing the dark flooring.

An enamel paint finish adds a subtle sheen. Light from the window and ceiling fixtures brings out the surface and the narrow shadow lines between the boards.

The wood mantel introduces a warm natural tone at the center of the design. Visible grain and knots stand out against the dark paneling, adding texture and contrast.

Its simple rectangular shape follows the horizontal lines of the shiplap and balances the proportions of the TV and fireplace.

“They listened to all our wishes, did the job exactly right, and finished it with enamel paint—it looks absolutely wonderful. It’s our Christmas gift to ourselves.”
